UK Wireless Frequency Reallocation Statement

As you will know, there are many changes proposed by the EU that will affect the future of wireless frequencies and their use in the UK.

We would like to update you about the current situation and give you some information on the progress that industry leader Beyerdynamic is making to offer viable future proof wireless products to the UK market.

The big question is: Which frequencies can be used in the UK for professional wireless microphone systems in the future?

Put simply, there are no common regulations for Europe making issues more complex for the manufacturers. Each country tends to handle the frequency allocation individually; the UK is no exception. The current proposals from the UK government are as follows:
- Starting from 01/01/2013 all wireless microphones will need to vacate the 800 MHz range. Wireless microphones will be transferred to TV channels 37-39.
- Within this new frequency range, channel 38 (598-622 MHz) will be available for licence exempt use in the UK (this is the same as TV channel 70 frequencies- which will still be available for use).

Current and past products including OPUS 300, OPUS 500, OPUS 600, OPUS 800 and OPUS 900 do not support the new channels 37-39; however they will work on deregulated channel 70 frequencies. Current systems will not work or be permitted to work on channel 69 frequencies. This means that current product will only support 2-3 channels of use in one application.

It will not be possible to change existing units to this new proposed frequency range.

Beyerdynamic are however launching in early 2010 a new version of the OPUS 600 range of wireless microphones. New units will be supplied offering frequency selections between 470-790 MHz UHF. These new units will support the licence exempt 598-622 MHz range. The new frequencies will permit in the region of 14 channels of concurrent operation, licence exempt.

It is expected that other Beyerdynamic OPUS series products will be launched later in 2010/2011 that will also offer this change in frequency availability.
